A communications blackout forces the caretaker of an orbital ark from cryo-sleep. He awakens to a silent, shrouded Earth—a tombstone for a world killed by a cataclysmic eruption. Believing the 10,000 souls in his charge are the last of their kind, he makes an impossible choice that will haunt him forever. He is rescued at the last moment by an impossible truth: there are other survivors. He is not the last man, just one of the few.
Now, humanity’s remnants must unite to forge a new future from the ashes of their past. Their goal: construct a faster-than-light vessel to seek a new home among the stars, guided only by a strange signal from deep space recorded years before the fall.
